CHAPTER EIGHT
Much to Gretaâs surprise, Nancy seemed in no hurry to get back to Paris, but spent her days idling in the sun and watching Pierre overhauling the cars. The huge yellow one in which they had arrived stood gleaming and ready for their departure, but Pierre was working now on a smaller car that had been standing in one of the garages.
âThatâs her ladyshipâs own car,â Maria had informed Greta. âShe always uses it to run around in when she stays down here.â Now she fussed while Pierre went over it inch by inch until it was ready for her to go flying round the countryside in, and it was after one such ride that she said casually to Greta:
âWhy donât you take the car for a flip while I am away? It will make a change for you to see a bit of the countryside.â
Greta looked at her in surprise.
âAre you going away, then? I thought we were going back home soon?â
Nancy smiled her cat-like smile, as she answered in a woman-to-woman voice:
âOh not yet...let me have a little fun while I am away. Richard wonât miss me, I assure you, and I want to meet some friends of mine in Rome for a few days.â
The whole house felt a sense of relief at Nancyâs departure, and the new nurse who, they learned, was entitled Miss Manners, came out of her retreat to sample the Italian sunshine. She stood blinking a little as she watched Greta playing with the baby in the garden, and as Greta caught sight of her she waved gaily and brought the child over to meet her.
âThere he is,â Greta said, with all of a motherâs pride. âIsnât he beautiful?â
Miss Manners looked at the child with her carefully prepared smile on her face, and then back at Greta.
âHe certainly is...,â she began, then flushed hotly and seemed at a loss for words. To cover her embarrassment, she took the child in her arms and began to rock him gently to and fro, a gesture that was entirely to the babyâs liking.
Greta gave the nurse a puzzled look. What on earth was the matter with her? Clucking away to the child and doing all she could to avoid looking into her eyes. She gave a short, puzzled laugh, saying:
âHereâgive him to me, heâs much too heavy now for that sort of thing.â
Miss Manners handed the child back gently and turned towards the house.
âI donât think Iâll stay out in this sun too long,â she muttered. âIt gives me such a headache.â
Greta walked thoughtfully down to the gate to meet Maria, who was taking her pick from the vegetable beds while Annaâs husband was out of the way. It was a sore point with Maria, that Annaâs husband objected to anything being taken out of his garden.
âHe thinks he grows them just for show,â she would mutter angrily, slicing them up swiftly before the irate gardener put in an appearance.
Now Maria came panting round the corner
